It's Time to Dust Off Your Elevator Pitch

Sep 01, 2022

How do you respond when asked ‘What do you do?'.

Do you get stage fright and draw a blank, stumble on your words, or say something along the lines of 'oh, I'm just an an accountant', or 'I'm a bookkeeper'?

No judgement, we’ve all done it.

But what does your response really say about you and your business? How does it communicate what you actually do, and the value that you bring to your clients every single day?

Hard cold fact. It doesn’t.

And that’s why having an elevator pitch is so important.

The Elevator Pitch may not be a new concept, or the latest shiny new thing, though it is the OG. And it is still as relevant as ever.

That's because an Elevator Pitch is so important when building awareness about your business, and communicating the value that you have to offer.

WHAT IS IT?
An elevator pitch is a stripped back, short and concise statement outlining what you do. It’s designed to spark interest in your business or offer in one quick sentence.

At its core, an Elevator Pitch bundles your Ideal Client, Niche, and Service offering into one persuasive and authentic statement that three key elements:

What you do (Z)
Who you do it for (X)
What you help them achieve (Y)

It can be as simple as:

"I help X achieve Y by doing Z"

OR

"I provide Z to help X achieve Y"

The beauty of an elevator pitch is that it can be used across multi platforms and networks to communicate a consistent story. This includes:

• Bio lines on your social media profiles.
• Copy for websites, proposals and emails.
• And of course, next time you find yourself in an elevator with you future dream client.

It’s important to keep in mind that your Elevator Pitch should be consistent across all of your channels.

People can be exposed to your business in so many ways, and you need to ensure that your message, and your pitch, is reinforced at every touch point. A potential lead may meet you at an event, and then check out your profile, or they may see you pop up in social media and head to your website.

By communicating a consistent message, you can start to build a story - an own it. So no-matter where or how someone becomes aware of your business, they hear the same story and gain an immediate understanding of what you have to offer.
